Definition Essay Racism - 632 Words

Definition: Racism Racism is the unequal treatment of the human beings on the basis of their skin color. Racism is believed to have existed as long as human beings have been in the world. It is usually associated with the skin color of a person, which makes one be distinguished from a certain race or community. The word racism happened to be common in 1600s due to the enslavement of the Africans by the Americans and Europeans. One of the common examples of racism was Americans’ discrimination against the Africans during the early 1600s. Though it is believed that slavery has existed since ancient times, the most outstanding one was the one practiced by the Americans. This can be considered institutional racism. According to Memmi (2000), institutional racism usually aims at barring anyone from interfering with the advantages of the dominant group in a given geographical location. The best example of this kind of racism was the Apartheid in South Africa. The British tried to protect their lavish lifestyles by preventing the Africans from attending the same schools with them. In addition, the Africans were not allowed to use the same roads or eat in the same cafes with the whites. Lastly, there is also new racism. Fredrickson (2003) considers new racism as covering the cultural matters. The belief that a certain race has a culture which is superior to that of another race is termed as new racism. Some communities may view the cultural practices of a certain community as inferior to theirs. Concerning this, they try to colonize the others through assimilating them into their culture. Culture is also concerned with the way people dress. In conclusion, there is an opinion that racism has existed since the BC era. Despite this, it is believed it actually commenced in 1619 when slavery arose in the US. During this period, people were enslaved and discriminated on the basis of their color type. However, there are different types of racism, and they include new racism, historicalShow MoreRelatedDefinition Essay On Racism1005 Words   |  5 Pages Throughout society, the definition of racism varies drastically. Persuasive Essay Theme - 897 Words

Everybody has learned a lesson at one point in their lives. Whether it is from something that they did, or something that someone else did. They learned a lesson. A common time that this happens could be in your teens, or nearing the end of your life. Sometimes to think about others, you have to hit rock bottom first, before you realize that you are not okay. In all three of the stories we read, the theme of regret was shown. The stories analyzed this theme by introducing the idea of being conceded in the beginning and dissatisfied in the end. Development of Self as a Nurse and Practice

Question: Discuss about the Development of Self as a Nurse and Practice. Answer: Introduction In order to maintain the quality of the nursing practices, the nurses of different healthcare institutions need to follow the code of ethics. The code of nursing ethics seems to importance for indicating the nurses about necessary decisions and actions with which they can handle a critical situation (Zahedi et al. 2013). These ethics indicates the nurses to handle their every patient equally and properly, regardless to the gender, class and type of the diseases. In this assignment, the ethical duties of the nurses have been described, depending upon the case study of Mr. Jones that helps to understand the self-development of a patient. Analysis From the case study of Mr. Jones, I have been observed that the patient is a patient of unmanaged diabetes and also has a tendency of alcoholism which has increased after the death of his wife after a long conjugal life. It affects him psychology in such a way that he again starts taking alcohol and ultimately is taken to the hospital with acute abdominal pain with vomiting tendency. The medication procedure of Mr. Jones is basically dependent upon pain relieving medicines, especially Morphine with a limited dose. The assigned nurse of Mr. Jones tries to give relieve to her patient by increasing the dose of Morphine after treating him in other occasions. In order to increase the dose, the nurse indulges in verbal argument with the physician who is concerned with the side effects of the dose of Morphine on the body of Mr. Jones as he is an aged man of fifty nine. According to me, the nurse was trying to decrease the level of pain of her patient, as per the ethics of nurses for which she approached the physician to increase the dose. Ethically there is no fault in the behaviour of the nurse, because she fights for the providing advanced care to her patient, which tends to create an authentic bond between the patient and the nurse. According to Douglas et al. (2014), the four major steps of caring in the nursing profession includes showing concern about care, taking care about something, giving proper care and receive the care. On the contrary, from the viewpoint of Kangasniemi, Pakkanen and Korhonen (2015), the four important care providing measures includes sense of responsibility, attentiveness towards the needs of the patient, sense of competency and the responses of the care receiver. The nurse in this case, fulfills these four factors by being responsible and attentive towards the need of Mr. Jones who feels massive abdominal pain. I thin k, this nurse do have the sense of competence towards the professional responsibility as a nurse which I also need to possess if I want to improve my career as a nurse. Like the nurse, I also need to be attentive towards the needs of my assigned patient along with doing the required actions in order to provide the patient physical relief. The conflicts between the professional nurses with the physicians are very common in the healthcare sector. However, if the nurse tries to implement her own idea and understanding in the medication procedure of the patient by going against the opinion of the doctor, she needs to be assured about the impact of her decision on the health of the patient because she cannot be the responsible one for the death of the patient. However, in my opinion, Mr. Jones specially needs mental assistance from a lovable person on whom he can trust and who can give him proper support and care. If I was the assigned nurse for Mr. Jones, I would have rely on the counseling sessions which can drive away the loneliness of the patient to some extent which can also turn his attention away from his physical ailment. Conclusion In this way, the self development of the nurse who learns from the case study of Mr. Jones has been illustrated vividly. By analyzing the case study, the nurse has learnt that the health security of the patient seems to be the first most things which the medical professionals need to consider. The nurses do have the right to take quick decisions in accordance with the importance of the situation but before that they need to assure the measure from their superiors because if it cause harm to the health of the patient, the nurse will be the responsible one. Therefore, it is important to perform the professional responsibilities with dignity and guidance from the superiors at the workplace. Importance of the Mayflower Compact Essay Example

Importance of the Mayflower Compact Essay At the conclusion of a demanding journey across the Atlantic the Pilgrims, afraid of a possible mutiny between the London and Leyden passengers, drew up the Mayflower Compact before setting foot on land to establish a covenant that would set forth guidelines for a strong government. The Mayflower Compact was important because it allowed the Pilgrims to freely commit as equals to their new society and Jesus Christ, and provided just and equal laws that could be built on, agreed to and enforced. It was significant that the Pilgrims were free men and chose to commit to God and start a Christian community together as equals. After years of suffering in England it was important they start their colony by recognizing God and their unified need to obey Him.The men who drafted the Mayflower Compact clearly showed it would benefit everyone by writing solemnly and mutually in the presence of God, and of one another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic, for our bett er ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends foresaid (Bradford, pg. 75-76 ).Being individuals, and supporting the idea of equality, the Pilgrims shared their assets with others in need so it would benefit everyone, for the good of their whole society. The Mayflower Compact showed the importance of the belief that covenants were between God and man, as well as between man and man.By placing each Pilgrims signature on the covenant it showed their willingness, before God, to come together and form one political unit, self-governed, for the good of the Colony. The Mayflower Compact was important as a legal document because once written it was agreed upon by all that each member would follow the laws for the good of the community. This is important because the belief was strong that for the government to be valid it must come from the agreement of the governed Colony.Individually, the Pilgrims might not have agree

Sample Informational Essay forth Grade

Sample Informational Essay forth GradeIn recent years the majority of colleges have increased their requirement for essays. So if you're in a good position to provide high quality information to a professor for your college course, then sample informational essays are what you should be writing. This is not the type of assignment that is something that you should skim over, this is the kind of essay that is worth mastering and improving your writing skills on.Sample essays can be written for any major, but most of them are concerned with an academic subject. Maybe you're writing an essay for the High School Level, or for a college class. Whatever your subject is, chances are you're going to want to write a compelling essay on your topic. After all, the purpose of the class isn't to make friends and have a good time, but to get a good grade. Therefore, when you write your essay you're giving yourself an opportunity to see if you really know the subject of your essay.A good idea would be to take some time to find out as much as you can about the topic that you're writing about. It would be a great idea to go to the library and either find out information that you can include in your essay or at least learn as much as you can about it.There are many different sources of information that you can use, such as; your high school library or friends who have already completed your subject. Don't just rely on the information given to you. Some courses have been designed so that students can get the information that they need by doing a study at home. If this is the case then you may need to find out more about the subject matter.Another good idea would be to talk to your teacher about the subject you're studying and ask her what kind of questions she would like to know. If she doesn't offer it up for you, try to find out whether she has other students who are working through the same topic. If she doesn't give you her own ideas, then you may have to go to another source of information. Also, if she just states that you will need to work harder to provide a good essay, then this might be another reason to avoid that subject. The last thing you need to remember is that the teacher will only provide you with the information that you need. All he wants you to do is to demonstrate your ability to think critically. This means that you will be expected to put into practice what you've learned in class.Remember to have the information that you need. If you don't know enough to be able to give the information you need, then there's no use in trying to do it. You'll never have a chance to get a good grade if you can't present the information you need.

A History of the Napoleonic Code (Code Napoléon)

A History of the Napoleonic Code (Code Napolà ©on) The Napoleonic Code  (Code Napolà ©on) was a unified legal code produced in post-revolutionary France and enacted by Napoleon in 1804. Napoleon gave the laws his name, and they largely remain in place in France today. They also heavily influenced world laws in the 19th century. It is easy to imagine how the conquering Emperor could spread a legal system across Europe, but it might have surprised many of his day to know long it outlasted him. The Need for Codified Laws France in the century before the French Revolution may have been a single country, but it was far from a homogenous unit. As well as language and economic differences, there was no single unified set of laws that covered the whole of France. Instead, there were large geographic variations, from the Roman Law which dominated in the south, to a Frankish/Germanic Customary Law which dominated in the north around Paris. Add to this the canon law of the church which controlled some affairs, a mass of royal legislation which had to be considered when looking at legal problems, and the effects of local laws derived from parlements or appellate courts and trials, and there was a patchwork which was very difficult to negotiate, and which stimulated a demand for a universal, equitable set of laws. However, there were plenty of people in positions of local power, often in venal offices, who worked to prevent any such codification, and all attempts to do so before the revolution failed. Napoleon and the French Revolution The French Revolution acted as a brush that swept away a mass of local differences in France, including many of the powers that stood against codifying the laws. The result was a country in a position to- in theory- create a universal code. And it was a place that really needed one. The Revolution went through various phases, and forms of government- including Terror- but by 1804 was under the control of General Napoleon Bonaparte, the man who appeared to have decided the French Revolutionary Wars in France’s favor. Glory Beyond the Battlefield Napoleon wasn’t just a man hungry for battlefield glory; he knew a state had to be built to support both him and a renewed France. Most important was to be a law code that bore his name. Attempts to write and enforce a code during the revolution had failed, and Napoleon’s achievement in forcing it through was massive. It also reflected glory back onto him: He was desperate to be seen as more than a general who took charge, but as the man who brought a peaceful end to the revolution, and establishing a legal code was a massive boost to his reputation, ego, and ability to rule.   The Code Napolà ©on The Civil Code of the French People was enacted in 1804 across all the regions France then controlled: France, Belgium, Luxembourg, chunks of Germany and Italy, and was later spread further across Europe. In 1807, it became known as the Code Napolà ©on. It was supposed to be written fresh, and based on the idea that a law based on common sense and equality should replace one based on custom, societal division, and the rule of kings. The moral justification for its existence was not that it came from God or a monarch (or in this case an emperor), but because it was rational and just. A Compromise Between Old and New All male citizens were supposed to be equal, with nobility, class, a position of birth all wiped away. But in practical terms, much of the revolution’s liberalism was lost and France turned back to Roman law. The code did not extend to emancipating women, who were subjugated to fathers and husbands. Freedom and the right of private property were key, but branding, easy imprisonment, and limitless hard labor returned. Non-whites suffered, and slavery was allowed in French colonies. In many ways, the Code was a compromise of the old and the new, favoring conservatism and traditional morality. Written as Several Books The Napoleonic Code was written as several Books, and although it was written by teams of lawyers, Napoleon was present at nearly half of the Senate discussions. The first book dealt with laws and people, including civil rights, marriage, relationships, including those of parent and child, etc. The second book concerned laws and things, including property and ownership. The third book tackled how you went about getting and modifying your rights, such as inheritance and through marriage. More codes followed for other aspects of the legal system: 1806’s Code of Civil Procedure; 1807’s Commercial Code; 1808’s Criminal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure; 1810’s Penal Code. Still in Place The Napoleonic Code has been modified, but essentially remains in place in France, two centuries after Napoleon was defeated and his empire dismantled. It is one of his most lasting achievements in a country in thrall to his rule for a turbulent generation. However, it was only in the latter half of the 20th century that laws were altered to reflect equality to women. Wide Influence After the Code was introduced in France and nearby areas, it spread across Europe and into Latin America. Sometimes a straight translation was used, but other times large changes were made to fit local situations. Later Codes also looked to Napoleon’s own, such as the Italian Civil Code of 1865, although this was replaced in 1942. In addition, laws in Louisiana’s civil code of 1825 (largely still in place), derive closely from the Napoleonic Code. However, as the 19th century turned into the 20th, new civil codes in Europe and around the world rose to reduce the importance of France’s, although it still has an influence.

My role in the family Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

My role in the family - Essay Example As such, my family has seen me develop into a caring person, who looks at the rest of the world as part of a larger family, such that the family’s needs to have its interest put first for the benefit of all. In addition to this family environment, the warm and caring environment has created in me a strong sense of interest in other people so that I understand them better and try to get along with them, which appears to be more of an outgoing character trait in me. As a result, the warm cocoon created by the family has developed a socially well-rounded girl capable of interacting with anyone in the society without problems. My family has contributed to my personality by ensuring that everyone in the family has a role to play in everyday activities or duties. In the family duties, everyone is assigned a task that he/she must fulfill before a given time. Moreover, in collective duties, we all work together towards a common goal, while in the individual tasks each one of the famil y members runs his or her own duty. Thus, my family has seen me grow substantially towards responsibilities in a way that could not have happened in their absence as it has allowed me to enjoy in partaking my duties. As a result, I am a responsible person who does not wait for other people to do things for me, but I instead take care of my own business. In addition, another way in which my family has developed my personality is through the entire family led by my parents to handle our share of problems collectively.

Contemporary issue in public health and health promotion Essay

Contemporary issue in public health and health promotion - Essay Example The most prevalent subtypes of the swine flu that were known were H1N1, H1N2, H2N1, and H3N1. Swine flu or the swine influenza virus is considered common in the world especially in places that have large pig populations. Since the virus originates in pigs, it is easy to get affected by the virus when a person is in constant contact with pigs. However, the virus transmission from the pigs to human is not common. Since the transmission of the virus from the pigs to humans is rare, there are minute chances of a human being suffering from human flu. This is due to the reaction of the body to the virus. With such a reaction, the virus will not result into human flu but will only release antibodies in the blood stream. Such a situation is commonly referred to as zoonotic swine flu. It is declared that people that are in constant contact with pigs are at a higher risk of contacting swine flu infection as compared to people that have rare contact with pigs. The first case of swine flu was reported in Scotland, shortly after a flight from Mexico on the 27th of April in 2009 (Gallagher, 2013:1). This case was diagnosed and reported to have strains of H1N1 virus (Gallagher, 2013:1). After this first cases, the infections spread across the world rapidly. By the 17th of May, more than a hundred cases of infection had been confirmed. This was a shocker to the whole world due to the way the cases were spreading in the whole world. Previously, it was considered that swine flu could only affect the people that are in constant contact with pigs. However, this was not the case after the confirmation of the first case of swine flu. In this situation, the swine flu infections were spreading from one person to another when there is close contact. This was a situation that led to outburst by many nations to ensure the spread of the swine flu was controlled and maintained at the lowest minimum (Great

Frankenstein Essay -- English Literature Essays

Frankenstein The novel begins in a frame narrative: Robert Walton, the captain of a ship, recounts his adventures through a series of letters to his sister back in England. Walton encounters Victor Frankenstein in the seas near the North Pole and is told his story, and the major part of the novel consists of Frankenstein's narration of his strange adventures. Victor tells Walton of his early life in Geneva and his close relationships with his cousin, Elizabeth Lavenza, who had come to live with his family when her mother died, and his friend Henry Clerval. Victor eventually goes to the university at Ingolstadt and begins to study natural philosophy and chemistry. During this time, he becomes consumed by the desire to discover the secret of life and finally succeeds. He fashions a creature out of old body parts and animates it one night. However, the creature appears so horrible that he runs away, allowing the creature to escape. Shortly afterwards, Victor is preparing to return to Geneva when he receives a letter from his father telling him that his youngest brother, William, has been murdered. Victor hurries home and, on the way, sees the monster in the woods and becomes convinced that the creature murdered William. Children and the hous Essay

Carver has been called a â€Å"dirty realist†. In what way do you think this can be applied to â€Å"Neighbors† and â€Å"They’re not your husband†?  I don’t think Carver’s work can really be stereotyped; it is certainly different from other fiction by other American writers, so I don’t think it can ever really be given a heading like â€Å"dirty realism†.  Even though the word â€Å"dirty† conjures pictures of filth, squalor and generally anything sexually different that people tend to shun, but in fact it almost has a double meaning- it doesn’t have to mean sordid- it’s almost a term for describing anything sexually explicit which might otherwise be thought unethical or immoral. â€Å"Neighbors† is a story which basically is an insight into someone else’s life- something that you would never normally know about that could be translated as interfering or an incredible lack of respect for other people and their belongings.  Ã¢â‚¬Å"They’re not your husband† is a portrayal of male behavior and how controlling it can sometimes be.  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Neighbors† is a revealing insight into the life of a couple going through a particularly difficult stage in their relationship. The idea of such a trivial thing like feeding their friends’ cat is a particular trait of Carver’s- to use something incredibly mundane to blossom something amazing from something pretty boring and routine. The way Bill and Arlene break all the unwritten laws of society and therefore bring a new flame to their relationship is odd in itself, but when you think about it, it is an obvious way- to try on the lives of people who are happy and confident in their relationship, and copy it into yours. The non conformist way they behave is yet another style of Carver; to show us the way people behave when they know other people can’t see into their world or the way they are acting. I don’t think that this particular story is particularly dirty, even if it is slightly sexual- it is not particularly crude or off putting. It is quite subtle- for example, the way that they always use the excuse of â€Å"playing with Kitty† when they spend hours in the Stones’ flat, is reminiscent of felines, which can be portrayed as erotic or sexual, and it is such a pathetic excuse that it’s obvious it’s not true- but neither of them ever questions it, they seem to have a hidden bond which lets them understand each other perfectly, and I think this is why they don’t need to discuss anything when they go into the flat together. Although the Millers make the fatal mistake of leaving the key inside the house at the end of the story, it is too late, the image of perfect, routine middle- class life is broken. We realise that when we saw these people as a normal couple, mundane with no ups and downs in their lives, that we had only just scratched the surface. These people can behave just as badly as anyone else an although we do not see it, they are just as unlikely to conform to some perfect boring lifestyle than any of us. â€Å"They’re not your husband† is a frank description of how male behavior can lead to extremes when men are put under great pressure. This can often happen in relationships when the female is more successful than the male, yet is unlikely to happen in circumstances where the man is the breadwinner and a wife or partner is left at home to look after children and the house.  This statement is proved when Earl’s failure to get himself a job leads to his controlling behavior over his wife in a want of something to live for, a purpose in life. Earl enjoys having some influence over her life and the way he can make decisions for her- after all, he doesn’t really have any to make for himself. It gives him something to think about- ways to get her to lose more weight quickly, to make her an object of desire that he can be proud to be seen with. Earl seems to have no opinions or morals of his own- he relies on the opinions and gossip of other people to tell him whether his wife is attractive or not. He doesn’t seem to be able to tell that she has lost too mush weight- it is like he has lost slight control of his mind, similar to the way anorexics do, they believe they are still fat even when they are skeletal. Earl would like her to continue losing weight until he hears someone say that she looks good- then he would be satisfied. The language used in this story is much more crude and chauvinist than that used in â€Å"Neighbors†. When the two business men discuss Doreen, saying â€Å"Some men like their quim fat†, this is deliberately coarse and blunt to represent just how lightly it was said, and how shallow Earl must be to take it seriously instead of standing up for his wife and forgetting about it. Instead he walks out of the cafe, pretending not to know her to save himself embarrassment. The language they use is quite dirty, but this is not Carver’s own views- it is him trying to show how insincere and shallow people can be, and the seedy way they can behave. How 0men can judge a woman simply by her looks and completely ignore character. This is extremely realistic in the sense of how people are embarrassed to admit they are with somebody because they think they’re special, desperate for other people not to think worse of them because they like someone not considered to be up to the standards of others. It shows the appalling level that things can get to in a real- life situation without any of the family noticing much. IT takes outsiders to make a difference, good or bad. In both stories Carver uses â€Å"dirty realism† to give the audience an insight into the lives of real people- things that could actually happen and don’t revolve around some huge unrealistic drama like a lot of fiction does. However it is a lot more obvious in â€Å"They’re not your husband† than it is in â€Å"Neighbors†, simply because the language is that much more raw and unrefined. It is subtler in â€Å"Neighbors†, yet it is still there, and if anything, I find the subtlety more effective than the obvious, harsh language in â€Å"They’re not your husband†. In both stories the language is simple and unpolished, leaving the mind of the reader open to discover the seedy and immoral world he has based his characters in. It opens your eyes to see the world around us in the same way, which is slightly daunting and depressing, but probably a good thing in the long run as it lets us look at other people and realise how pointless their lives are.  I think Carver has been classed as a â€Å"dirty realist† simply for the reasons that he uses sex as to act as a part in the life of human beings which can be changed by something which doesn’t have to be very dramatic, making it realistic.

Film Review Marooned in Iraq - 1381 Words

Watching this movie has given a great insight into the Muslim film industry especially the stark differences and similarities that exist within the cinematic realm. This movie was based on an aging musician, Mirza, longing to see his wife, Hanareh again; this was spurred on from receiving a letter from his ex wife. Mizer cons his two sons Barat and Audeh to come and look for their mother and help in her time of need. After traveling from Iran to Iraq and encountering multiple dangerous situations, being robbed by thieves, and singing multiple songs the trio arrives in an orphan camp. This is where Audeh adopting two boys that he hopes he can train to have a great voice like his and ultimately become his sons, he stays behind while the teacher, Barat, and Mirza travel on to bring a child to get some medicine. Barat finds a woman after traveling on with his father and the teacher when they encounter the uncovering of a mass grave where Barats sweetheart thinks her brother may be buried at. The movie only assumes that this woman goes on to become his wife. In the final scene after traveling many more miles Mirza finally thinks he has found Hanareh at a quarantine camp, but ends up leaving with her daughter to care for after the other women in the camp tell that she has left. Hanareh was at the camp but could not bear to reveal herself thinking it will bring her shame, and that Mirza will not love her anymore after she lost her voice. This movie takes place during the Iraq-Iran
