Frankenstein Essay -- English Literature Essays
Frankenstein The novel begins in a frame narrative: Robert Walton, the captain of a ship, recounts his adventures through a series of letters to his sister back in England. Walton encounters Victor Frankenstein in the seas near the North Pole and is told his story, and the major part of the novel consists of Frankenstein's narration of his strange adventures. Victor tells Walton of his early life in Geneva and his close relationships with his cousin, Elizabeth Lavenza, who had come to live with his family when her mother died, and his friend Henry Clerval. Victor eventually goes to the university at Ingolstadt and begins to study natural philosophy and chemistry. During this time, he becomes consumed by the desire to discover the secret of life and finally succeeds. He fashions a creature out of old body parts and animates it one night. However, the creature appears so horrible that he runs away, allowing the creature to escape. Shortly afterwards, Victor is preparing to return to Geneva when he receives a letter from his father telling him that his youngest brother, William, has been murdered. Victor hurries home and, on the way, sees the monster in the woods and becomes convinced that the creature murdered William. He arrives home to find that Justine Moritz, a girl who had lived for some time in the Frankenstein household, has been accused of the murder. She is tried, condemned, and executed, despite her assertions of innocence, and Victor becomes despondent a...

Children and the hous Essay
Carver has been called a ââ¬Å"dirty realistâ⬠. In what way do you think this can be applied to ââ¬Å"Neighborsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re not your husbandâ⬠?à I donââ¬â¢t think Carverââ¬â¢s work can really be stereotyped; it is certainly different from other fiction by other American writers, so I donââ¬â¢t think it can ever really be given a heading like ââ¬Å"dirty realismâ⬠.à Even though the word ââ¬Å"dirtyâ⬠conjures pictures of filth, squalor and generally anything sexually different that people tend to shun, but in fact it almost has a double meaning- it doesnââ¬â¢t have to mean sordid- itââ¬â¢s almost a term for describing anything sexually explicit which might otherwise be thought unethical or immoral. ââ¬Å"Neighborsâ⬠is a story which basically is an insight into someone elseââ¬â¢s life- something that you would never normally know about that could be translated as interfering or an incredible lack of respect for other people and their belongings.à ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re not your husbandâ⬠is a portrayal of male behavior and how controlling it can sometimes be.à ââ¬Å"Neighborsâ⬠is a revealing insight into the life of a couple going through a particularly difficult stage in their relationship. The idea of such a trivial thing like feeding their friendsââ¬â¢ cat is a particular trait of Carverââ¬â¢s- to use something incredibly mundane to blossom something amazing from something pretty boring and routine. The way Bill and Arlene break all the unwritten laws of society and therefore bring a new flame to their relationship is odd in itself, but when you think about it, it is an obvious way- to try on the lives of people who are happy and confident in their relationship, and copy it into yours. The non conformist way they behave is yet another style of Carver; to show us the way people behave when they know other people canââ¬â¢t see into their world or the way they are acting. I donââ¬â¢t think that this particular story is particularly dirty, even if it is slightly sexual- it is not particularly crude or off putting. It is quite subtle- for example, the way that they always use the excuse of ââ¬Å"playing with Kittyâ⬠when they spend hours in the Stonesââ¬â¢ flat, is reminiscent of felines, which can be portrayed as erotic or sexual, and it is such a pathetic excuse that itââ¬â¢s obvious itââ¬â¢s not true- but neither of them ever questions it, they seem to have a hidden bond which lets them understand each other perfectly, and I think this is why they donââ¬â¢t need to discuss anything when they go into the flat together. Although the Millers make the fatal mistake of leaving the key inside the house at the end of the story, it is too late, the image of perfect, routine middle- class life is broken. We realise that when we saw these people as a normal couple, mundane with no ups and downs in their lives, that we had only just scratched the surface. These people can behave just as badly as anyone else an although we do not see it, they are just as unlikely to conform to some perfect boring lifestyle than any of us. ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re not your husbandâ⬠is a frank description of how male behavior can lead to extremes when men are put under great pressure. This can often happen in relationships when the female is more successful than the male, yet is unlikely to happen in circumstances where the man is the breadwinner and a wife or partner is left at home to look after children and the house.à This statement is proved when Earlââ¬â¢s failure to get himself a job leads to his controlling behavior over his wife in a want of something to live for, a purpose in life. Earl enjoys having some influence over her life and the way he can make decisions for her- after all, he doesnââ¬â¢t really have any to make for himself. It gives him something to think about- ways to get her to lose more weight quickly, to make her an object of desire that he can be proud to be seen with. Earl seems to have no opinions or morals of his own- he relies on the opinions and gossip of other people to tell him whether his wife is attractive or not. He doesnââ¬â¢t seem to be able to tell that she has lost too mush weight- it is like he has lost slight control of his mind, similar to the way anorexics do, they believe they are still fat even when they are skeletal. Earl would like her to continue losing weight until he hears someone say that she looks good- then he would be satisfied. The language used in this story is much more crude and chauvinist than that used in ââ¬Å"Neighborsâ⬠. When the two business men discuss Doreen, saying ââ¬Å"Some men like their quim fatâ⬠, this is deliberately coarse and blunt to represent just how lightly it was said, and how shallow Earl must be to take it seriously instead of standing up for his wife and forgetting about it. Instead he walks out of the cafe, pretending not to know her to save himself embarrassment. The language they use is quite dirty, but this is not Carverââ¬â¢s own views- it is him trying to show how insincere and shallow people can be, and the seedy way they can behave. How 0men can judge a woman simply by her looks and completely ignore character. This is extremely realistic in the sense of how people are embarrassed to admit they are with somebody because they think theyââ¬â¢re special, desperate for other people not to think worse of them because they like someone not considered to be up to the standards of others. It shows the appalling level that things can get to in a real- life situation without any of the family noticing much. IT takes outsiders to make a difference, good or bad. In both stories Carver uses ââ¬Å"dirty realismâ⬠to give the audience an insight into the lives of real people- things that could actually happen and donââ¬â¢t revolve around some huge unrealistic drama like a lot of fiction does. However it is a lot more obvious in ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re not your husbandâ⬠than it is in ââ¬Å"Neighborsâ⬠, simply because the language is that much more raw and unrefined. It is subtler in ââ¬Å"Neighborsâ⬠, yet it is still there, and if anything, I find the subtlety more effective than the obvious, harsh language in ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re not your husbandâ⬠. In both stories the language is simple and unpolished, leaving the mind of the reader open to discover the seedy and immoral world he has based his characters in. It opens your eyes to see the world around us in the same way, which is slightly daunting and depressing, but probably a good thing in the long run as it lets us look at other people and realise how pointless their lives are.à I think Carver has been classed as a ââ¬Å"dirty realistâ⬠simply for the reasons that he uses sex as to act as a part in the life of human beings which can be changed by something which doesnââ¬â¢t have to be very dramatic, making it realistic.

Film Review Marooned in Iraq - 1381 Words
Watching this movie has given a great insight into the Muslim film industry especially the stark differences and similarities that exist within the cinematic realm. This movie was based on an aging musician, Mirza, longing to see his wife, Hanareh again; this was spurred on from receiving a letter from his ex wife. Mizer cons his two sons Barat and Audeh to come and look for their mother and help in her time of need. After traveling from Iran to Iraq and encountering multiple dangerous situations, being robbed by thieves, and singing multiple songs the trio arrives in an orphan camp. This is where Audeh adopting two boys that he hopes he can train to have a great voice like his and ultimately become his sons, he stays behind while the teacher, Barat, and Mirza travel on to bring a child to get some medicine. The Serial Peripheral Interphase - 533 Words
The Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) is a synchronous bi-directional (full duplex) serial data protocol used by microcontrollers to enable communication between one or more peripheral devices that are all of short distances to one another. Furthermore, it can also be used for communication between two microcontrollers; with particular interest between Arduino boards and Multiwii flight controllers. In general, an SPI data link consists of one master; typically a microcontroller which controls one or more peripheral devices known as slaves. Both the master and the slaves share three common lines which include; MISO (Master In Slave Out) which is responsible for transferring data from the slave to the master; MOSI (Master Out Slave In) which is responsible for transferring data from the master to the slaves; and SCK (Serial Clock) which is created by the master and is responsible for synchronising the transmission of data between master and slave in respect clock pulses. There is also SS (Slave Select) line that is specific to a pin on each slave device and in which the master can use to enable and disable specific slave devices. In the case a slave devices SS pin is low, communication is enabled with the master. However in the case it is high, communication is disabled with the master. This allows multiple devices using SPI to share common MISO, MOSI, and CLK lines. Little Tsukiji The Market Industry Profile Essay
The Market Industry Profile Little Tsukiji is a Japanese restaurant serving sushi, sashimi and teppanyaki. Japanese food is very much popular in Singapore. In Singapore, it is very common for office workers to eat out for lunch. ââ¬Å"As of 2001, there are more than a hundred Japanese restaurants in Singapore, of which about one-third are sushi restaurants. The rest include family restaurants, izakaya, teppanyaki, ramen and fast food restaurants. And in many Japanese restaurants, sushi and/or sashimi is a must on the menu.â⬠(Ng, 2001, Pages 8 ââ¬â 9) Therefore, the choice of a restaurant specialising in teppanyaki, as it is not as common in Singapore and there is a lot of opportunity to make a mark with differentiation in products. Journalism Developments and Debates
Question: Discuss about theJournalismfor Developments and Debates. Answer: Reason for Wanting to Study Journalism Since a long time, I have been cherishing the dream of studying journalism. In todays world, journalism is a dynamic profession. It is not because I will be able to travel various places while collecting news, but because it will allow me to understand the world and the humans. I always had a knack for collecting news and writing it down. However, I want to study the subject to learn professional skills, and theories and practices of journalism from past to the present. As a subject journalism covers a lot of areas. Starting from politics, art and literature, cinema, television, to international relationship, business, science, economics; journalistic writing is applied in all these sectors. After completion of my course, I will be able to choose the area I wish to write about and then explore it with my own capability. Journalism, as a profession, is gaining not only popularity but validity with time. People are hungry for news. They want to know in detail what is happening around the world. They want to know all interesting news. It is the responsibility of the journalists to aware them about every situation. Journalists are bound to find all interesting news and cater them to the public. Even in some cases, their presentation makes the story interesting. I am willing to know how they work and what they focus on. It s also seen how journalism as a profession have undergone changes with the advent of digitization. Now we avail news from internet. Various social media websites are working as a communication platform for the journalists. After doing my course, I will be able to explore my profession with the help of technology. Understanding of Changes in Contemporary Media and the Impact on Journalism In an age of globalization, media has undergone a complete change. Starting from the communication platform to the type of news catered to the public, journalism as profession has become a more dynamic one. Newspaper, radio and television were the main communication media. However, with the technological explosion and development of internet, media has started using these platforms as well. Nielsen et al (2013) opined, Digitization has made the communication easy. It is a fact that we want to get the news as fast as possible. According to Neumayer (2013), in earlier days, newspaper was the only medium. One had to wait for the next day to get the news of the previous day. Then television and radio came. It made the availability of news faster than newspaper. However, these media platforms started become old when internet established itself as the fastest of all. As discussed by Franklin (2012), now, people dont have to wait at all. Every incident of every single moment is catered to people through internet. Such changes have made journalism more challenging than before. With the explosion of news, now we dont want to wait. Even, people do not waste their energy much on same news story because of the availability of bunch of news stories within a short period. Therefore, news stories are having less longevity. Neveu (2016) discussed, it is estimated that between 2007 and 2015, CNN has edited their news packages into half of their original length . It is the challenge of the journalists to make every news story interesting. Otherwise, it will not sustain. Sometimes, it has resulting into yellow journalism which is not acceptable. Kammer (2013) explained that as a negative impact, the journalists serve invalid and not so valuable news stories in some cases to retain public interest. Sometimes, it crosses the limits of libel. However, journalism is not a profession where the journalists can write anything that happens. It is about making the authentic and accurate story and serving it to those who need them. To talk about positive impact of journalism, it is needless to say that it has given birth to personal blogs and websites in large numbers. The aspiring writers are enjoying the freedom of speech. According to Picard (2014), the bloggers do not belong to any specific media banner. Therefore, they are able to exercise their own point of view through blog writing. They are true to their own emotional outcomes and do not depend on any media house. Surely, the profession is earning them both money and job satisfaction. The readers are also exercising their choices. They are given thousands of stories from which they select the ones they prefer to read. Surely the change has made journalism a challenging profession.
